5 Fitness Tips for New Students 2018

A healthy body is more important than anything else as in no way you can concentrate on any task if you are not at peace with yourself. Unfortunately, when students join tertiary and other higher learning institutions, they find themselves in new environments, and there is no one to guide them on healthy living unlike at home, where their family would usually take on that role.

Some are ignorant, they care less about health fitness tips and only realise their benefits once they are affected. Balancing student health with academics is not easy, but the importance of fitness cannot be overemphasized. If you are out there wondering which fitness program best suits you, we’ve got you covered as here are 5 health and fitness tips you can adopt in your new journey towards healthy living.

Engage in extra-curricular activities

One good thing about being in a College/ University is that there is a variety of games to choose from. There is therefore no reason for not partaking in one. If you don’t want to join any of the already established teams, you can ask your friends to form your own sports club although if you want to represent your college, you will have to join the main team.

Watch your nutrition

What we eat has a direct correlation with our health and just as we exercise to control weight by burning calories. Watching what you eat is a step forward towards achieving a fitness goal. Like they say, ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away.’ This means that if you avoid junk food and stick to a well-balanced diet, you will reduce the frequency of seeing a doctor.

A poor diet can result in the following:

  • Mental instability – your brain requires food with sufficient amount of calories, and undernourishment may reduce the level of attention and reduce concentration which, in turn, may affect your performance.
  • Lifestyle diseases – taking poor diet (junk food – mostly deep-fried foods) increase chances of suffering from diabetes, cardiac arrests, and high blood pressure.
  • Low energy level – our bodies require energy to function well, and lack of it leads to fatigue and dull feelings.

Plan for your diet in advance

Cooking your own meals may not be one of the coolest things to do but can save you from eating whatever comes your way. When hungry, people don’t care much about what they eat. However, if you can prepare your own meal, at least you will ensure it’s balanced and healthy. Even as you prepare your own meal, chances of eating unbalanced food are high if you don’t plan what to cook in advance. This allows you to shop and stock the required diets.

Limiting time spent on computers

Whether studying online or just using computers for other things, limiting hours spent on a computer can significantly improve your general wellness.

The following are some of the daily fitness tips that you can adopt to improve your health:

  • The glaring light emitted by computer’s screen can damage your eyesight if you spend long hours on a computer. To protect your eyes, put an antiglare screen on top to prevent eyes from overstraining.
  • Be mindful of your sitting posture; always sit in an upright position as bending too much may injure your backbone.
  • Limit studying hours by making a study schedule and sticking to it.
  • Sleep well at night as your body requires enough time to rest and rejuvenate. Naturally, nights are meant for that purpose.
  • Slot time for yoga between studies as sitting in one position for long is tiring. Take some time off to stretch a little.
  • Avoid working in bed and instead set up a study room and a desk.Exercise for students

Managing stress

College environment can be stressful for new students but managing stressful situations helps in keeping your body fit. The following are useful fitness tips for managing stressful conditions:

  • If students stay don’t see their loved ones for long, they get ‘homesick’. To avoid this, schedule times to go home or organize for your family and close ones to visit you at your school.
  • High academic performance may be stressful as assignments must be completed within set deadlines. Managing your time and submitting assignments in time will save you from last-minute pressures.
  • Take breaks and exercise. As the saying goes, ‘all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’ so, take breaks to give your mind some time to rest.
