Skin Care Routine – Before and After a Workout

Working out at the gym every week (or day) is amazing! It gets us breaking a sweat, pushing our limits and feeling ready to face the world. But why spend all of your time and effort working out to improve your physical and mental health only to have your skin age quickly or to be covered in acne? We’ve forgotten skin care!

It’s easy to forget that all of the equipment that we use at the gym may have been used by hundreds of people in that day. This creates a breeding ground for bacteria. So, by the time you finish your workout these bacteria are all over your body. For a lot of people, without a proper skin care routine in place, the bacteria can sit on your skin all day. Combined with; the toxins that you have sweat out, the need for hydration and other daily duties our skin goes through, simply waiting until the end of the day to clean all of that off really isn’t the best option.

The good news is that working out is also one of the best things you can do for your skin! By increasing blood flow, exercise can help nourish skin cells helping to replenish damaged cells and can help leave us looking healthy and vibrant. Before and after a workout, we just need to remember to clean our skin to keep it healthy and radiant. Keep reading to find out how.

Before Workout Skin Care

1. Cleanse, Cleanse, Cleanse.

Whether you work out early morning, mid-day or evening, cleansing your skin before a gym session is a must. No matter your gender, this applies to us all!

When we exercise, our pores widen to allow our skin to sweat and cool us down. Sweat also helps to push impurities out of our skin. If we haven’t cleaned the skin beforehand, the pollution and bacteria that have gathered on your face during the night or day can end up blocking pores. For anyone who wears makeup, we must take it off before hitting the gym. I know it can give us confidence and sometimes it is a mask that we like to hide our imperfections under, but imagine those pores opening up and trying to breathe.

If you wear makeup and workout, there is a layer of primer, foundation, concealer and powder your pores have to try and breathe through. Inevitably pores are going to get clogged. We therefore recommend taking a cleanser with you and cleaning your skin before your workout. Bear in mind, just the journey to the gym itself exposes our skin to pollution and bacteria.

2. Hydrate

Make sure you hydrate from within. No products are needed for the duration of your workout, just let your skin breathe. Your skin is an organ (in fact, the largest one in our bodies) that requires adequate hydration to perform at its best. Just like all our other organs water is its best friend.

Keeping your body properly hydrated can help your skin to:

Slow the ageing process.

Staying well hydrated can help maintain your skin’s elasticity and combat the appearance of those dreaded wrinkles. So, keep drinking!

Improve the appearance of your skin.

It comes as no surprise, but a lack of hydration can make your skin look dry, flaky and tight. Not only does keeping skin moisturized and hydrated help it appear more radiant, but it also helps plump the skin and combat build-up of dead skin cells.

Rid your skin of toxins.

When you are not hydrated your skin can’t rid itself of toxins. This results in irritation and inflammation which doesn’t help give us the perfect glow.

Fight oil and acne.

While adding more moisture to the skin might seem counter intuitive, the more hydrated your skin is the less oily our skin is. This is because when our skin is dehydrated it sends a signal to the glands telling them to produce more oil as a defensive mechanism.

So, take a large bottle of water and try and drink it all – it’s all part of your skin care routine!

After Work Out Skin Care

So you have completed your work out, time to go home, right ? Wrong!

Time to repeat step one !

1. Cleanse, Cleanse, Cleanse.

Just like before the workout you need to clean all of the bacteria off your skin. I know all you probably want to do is be carried out of the gym and put straight into bed rather than spend 5 minutes cleaning your face again. However, this next stage is hugely important! When our body starts to cool down, our pores start to close and trap whatever dirt and bacteria is within them. When I’m lacking motivation to do this, I picture every single sweaty person who has put their hand, leg or body onto the equipment I’ve used. I also think of all the germs that they have transferred, then times that by 2. Needless to say I find myself rushing to clean my body as quickly as possible!

This time, we want to (if possible) clean off our body too. If your gym has shower facilities jump straight in and wash off all that bacteria. Try to make sure it’s on a cooler temperature so not to strip your body of the natural oils.

If showering isn’t an option don’t stress, just make sure you change out of the sweaty gym clothes and into dry clean ones to allow your skin to breath. but never forget to cleanse the face.

Follow the guide above for face cleaning.

2. Toner

Now I know that a lot of people get a bit confused with toners, do we really need them? the plain and simple answer is yes!

Toner isn’t just for female faces, it’s not a makeup product.

It isn’t an anti-aging product.

Toner isn’t the going to be the magic potion to get you that job you really want or that partner that is out of your league, but it may give you the confidence to do all of that!

It may look like water, act like water and even smell like water but it most definitely isn’t just water. It can contain acids, glycerine, antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. All those ingredients may sound foreign, but they can do wonders for your skin when used in a daily skin care routine such as:

Shrink Pores

Right after a workout our pores are enlarged to help us cool down and let our skin breathe. Once we’ve cleansed our skin, we want them to shrink as quick as possible to reduce the exposure your skin gets to any more bacteria and pollution.  Using a toner closes those pores up quickly allowing our skin to protect us!

Restores the skins natural PH

Our skin is typically within a pH balance of between five and six (on a scale from 0 to 14) making it slightly acidic. This PH can get out of sync from using things such as soap and shampoo or even cleansers. When this happens, your skin needs to work extra hard to return to its normal levels and that may result in extra oil production but using a toner can help restore the balance back to a normal PH quickly.

Prevents ingrown hairs

Toners that contain glycolic acid or other alpha hydroxy acids can help to prevent ingrown hairs. This point is helpful for men especially as ingrown hairs can be painful and unsightly especially on the face, so it also aids in grooming.

Hydrates and refreshes skin

Some toners are humectants. This means they help to bind moisture to the skin. It will leave your skin revitalised even when you’re on the go.

3. Moisturiser

Moisturiser is your best friend!

Want to keep your skin wrinkle free for as long as possible? Moisturiser

Have wrinkles but want them to look less prominent? Moisturiser

Dull and flaky skin getting you down? Moisturiser

Skin feeling tight and itchy? Moisturiser

Makeup looking patchy? Moisturiser

The point is that most common skin concerns are from a lack of moisture in the skin.

For men, using moisturiser doesn’t have to detract from your masculinity. There are plenty of moisturisers that are targeted towards men’s faces with no fragrance. In fact, men need moisturiser more than women! Shaving is an exfoliator, meaning there is lovely new set of skin cells at the surface of the skin and all the dead or dulling ones are taken with the hair on the razor blade. Adding a moisturiser to a skin care routine allows the skin to retain the radiance of the new skin cells for longer, and who doesn’t want that?!

Keeps skin looking youthful

One of the best ways to keep skin looking youthful, radiant and glowing is to include a moisturiser in to your daily regime. Especially in winter, but all year-round moisturising keeps the skin cells from drying out and dying. By keeping your face plump and hydrated you reduce the chance of your skin losing elasticity and being able to fold and create wrinkles.

Keeps your skin clear of acne

Contrary to popular opinions, adding a moisturiser to your skin care will actually help your face stay clear of spots and acne! The reason why we can break out is often due to the hydration levels in our skin.  As I’ve explained previously, the less hydration in the skin, the more likely our skin will send a signal to the glands telling them to produce more oil as a defensive mechanism. While our own oil can be a good thing, overproduction of it can lead to clogged pores and inevitably acne. Adding a moisturiser will stop the glands from producing this signal and therefore keep your skin clear.

Protection

Many of our daily face products that are great at cleaning our skin can also dry it out. If a moisturiser is not used, skin can go red and peel. This therefore won’t be the best utilisation of the products and can leave you wondering why you spent money on something that ruined your skin. The moisturiser will calm your skin. Adding moisture back into the new layers of skin and really enhance the products used previously.

Make your makeup look flawless

This point isn’t applicable to everyone but including moisturiser into your makeup routine as well as a skin care routine will give your makeup a new lease of life. The problem that a lot of people can face is that when you apply makeup to a face that isn’t moisturised, the makeup will cling to a dry patch. This creates a patchy look where some parts of the face look more covered than others. By simply adding a moisturiser to the mix you allow the products to glide over the skin evenly.

Extra Steps

SPF

For most of us, I can safely say that the only time we think about SPF is when an impending holiday is looming. As much as the smell of sun lotion brings about thoughts of sun, sand and good food, it shouldn’t be reserved for our sunny holidays.

There are two kinds of ultraviolet rays emitted from the sun. UVA (Ultraviolet radiation) and UVB (Ultraviolet B-Rays).

UVB

UVB rays are the ones that cause sunburn and their intensity varies from summer to winter.

UVA

UVA rays have the same intensity during summer or winter. It’s important to know that UVA rays are the ones that penetrate deeper in your skin and can cause skin aging and skin cancer. UVA damage is not reversible. We must protect ourselves at all times of the year from these rays. Wearing sunscreen every day can protect you from exposure to these Invisible rays that are part of the energy that comes from the sun. They can burn the skin, and cause skin cancer.

It’s cloudy out, so you don’t need to dig out the sun screen right? Wrong!

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV rays can pass through clouds which means whether you are abroad or at home you should wear some form of SPF daily! If it snows wherever you are this is even more reason to get the SPF on because the snow can reflect up to 80% of the harmful UV rays. Some of the moisturisers above have SPF already in but just in case here’s some other SPF products.
