Mother’s Day Gift Guide – Health and Fitness

Mother’s Day is fast approaching, with so much to do gift buying is probably the last thing on your mind. It’s always hard to find the right gift, and often trying to find one that isn’t the generic flowers and chocolate combo can be a struggle. With so many people now taking control of their health and fitness, why not help them with their journey. We have put together a guide for the type of gifts to suit your mums needs to help you on your way to finding the perfect gift.

Take a Breath

We know that sometimes all your mum needs is to take 10 minutes to herself and not have someone ask ‘what’s for dinner?’ or ‘do we have anything to eat?’ . Treat her this Mother’s Day with a day of pure relaxation.

Let her have a lie in and maybe even treat her to a breakfast in bed (but don’t forget the washing up).

Give her some time to herself to do something she doesn’t normally get the chance to do. Yoga has been proven to help you sleep better, focus more and generally become a happier person. Our yoga set is a perfect present for letting her focus on herself. It comes with two yoga blocks, a 6mm mat, Gym ball and a yoga belt; everything to get her started.

We all have goals of where we want to be and what we want to achieve, whether it be physically or mentally; weight loss/gain to learning a new skill or simply falling asleep at a reasonable time.

Help your mom with some of her goals this Mother’s Day.

General fitness

A recent study from Iowa state University encourages us to pick up weights a few times a week for better overall health. The study showed that spending less than an hour a week on weight training can reduce the risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke by 40 – 70 percent! For mums who are consciously trying to better their general health, adding some weights into their workout routine may benefit more than just their muscles.

Weight loss

Although cardio is commonly used for aiding weight loss, weights can be a very good addition to this. It can be argued that weight training work outs don’t normally burn as many calories as a cardio workout, but weight training is more effective at building muscle (shock). Muscle burns more calories at rest than other tissues, which is the key to increasing your resting metabolism. For mums who are struggling to lose those extra few pounds, adding in weights to their workout might just do the trick to give them the boot for good.

Injuries can really slow us down and sometimes the recovery after can be longer than we expect. Adding weights and resistance into any rehabilitation can really help improve the speed and the success of the exercises.

Add in a resistance band to exercises such as lateral leg raises and side lunges to really focus strengthening the muscles; perfect for knee injuries.

If your mum already has a workout plan that is doing wonders for her, what do you do then?

After a workout where you have really pushed yourself, your muscles really do burn – which proves you’re doing something right – but when you’re at work it can slow you down. Focusing on recovery can really benefit those aches and pains of progress.

When she’s pushed herself in a class or personal workout your mom can feel the pain. After a workout, muscles and joints can become sore and stiff from a build-up of lactic acid. It is important when this happens to carry out a post workout. Foam rolling is a beneficial post gym exercise as is recruits fresh blood and nutrients to the fatigued muscles. This means she can be back smashing her goals before long.
