treadmill essentials

Let’s face it, buying a treadmill is not something that we do every day… or in fact every year. So, it’s not unusual to feel a bit lost when you decide that you actually want one. What do I look out for? How much power should it have? What features will actually benefit? These are all questions that may spring to mind, so let us put your mind at ease with the JLL guide for treadmill essentials.

1. TYPE OF TREADMILL

Manual

A manual treadmill, as the name suggests, will only move when you start to run. It is powered only by the energy created by you, so the faster you go, the faster it goes. While the benefits include not having to plug the treadmill in and being a lot cheaper, you also need to consider the fact that there will be no emergency stop or workout programs.

Motorised

These are what we generally imagine when we think of the word treadmill. A machine that operates using a motor and can be control though the monitor.

Folding

Folding treadmills are becoming more and more popular due to the space saving perk. When you want to workout, simply press a release button or hatch. The treadmill will fold down. You do your workout and fold back up to store away. In fact folding treadmills are becoming the norm when it comes to domestic equipment.

Commercial

These are the big, sturdy treadmills that you find in gym. Commercial treadmill are a lot more expensive than domestic machines as they are built to be robust and durable. Modern commercial treadmills now come with touch screen monitors and the ability to stream TV shows through WiFi. Unless your’e planning to have hundreds of different users of your treadmill a month, you probably wont need one of these.

2. WHERE TO PUT YOUR TREADMILL

This point may sound obvious, but it is worth mentioning because it’s easy to overlook. It’s important to ensure that you have somewhere to put the treadmill before you buy it because they will take up a considerable amount of space. If space is an issue however, there is now an abundance of folding treadmills on the market but be careful that this isn’t the only good feature they possess.

3. MAXIMUM USER WEIGHT

A factor that you may want to consider is the maximum user weight of the treadmill. In addition to informing us of the machine’s obvious restrictions, this will give a good indication of how robust the machine is. A machine with a higher user weight is likely to be able to withstand the most impact whilst in use. Anything with a max user weight under 100kg should raise alarm bells.

4. HORSEPOWER

The levels of horsepower directly affect how fast the treadmill will be able to go at max speed. So, if you want to buy a treadmill that will allow you to run at a good pace, without feeling like the machine is going to break, look out for the horsepower spec. As a rule of thumb, any machine that has under 2HP should be assessed further.

Some companies will also present the speed figures, these will also give you an idea of the Treadmill ability. Treadmill speed is usually presented in Km/h, but also be wary of the slowest speed in addition to the fastest. If the treadmills highest speed is less than 10 Km/h, it probably won’t be the best unless your’e just planning to walk on it. The figure of the slowest speed is important because it gives an idea of the treadmills output range. So, what you need to look out for is a Treadmill with a very low starting speed and the highest max speed in your price range.

 5. INCLINE

The incline feature on treadmills offers the user a more challenging workout while maintaining the same speed. Not all treadmills will have the ability raise the incline of the running surface. If this is something that you desire as a feature in your treadmill, you will also need to look out for the degree of the incline. Some treadmill inclines are displayed using the max degree, while some display the levels of incline i.e. 10 levels of incline.

6. FRAME

The frame is another aspect of the treadmill that should be looked into more closely. You will notice that the more expensive the treadmill, the sturdier the frame that supports it is. This is a common compromise that budget treadmill manufacturers make in order to sell at a lower price. A poor frame creates a feeling of instability and increases the noise when in use. Therefore, make sure that the treadmill you select has a strong and durable frame.

7. SHOCK ABSORPTION

The importance of the shock absorption method will often get overlooked by those who are not familiar with treadmills. Let’s face it, it’s not something you are going to think about unless you are told. These usually come in the form of either springs or preferably shock absorbers. In relation to the springs, they will reduce the impact when you run however, they can feel less natural when compared to the shock absorbers.

8. HEART-RATE MONITORING AND PROGRAMS

You can now get reasonably priced treadmills that have built in heart rate monitors and built in programs. A heart rate monitor allows you to record progress and therefore maintain standards. By having built in programs, you can get straight into a workout without the need to plan yourself. Some treadmills will allow you to make your own programs and tailor your treadmill to your own needs. Take notice of what any potential treadmill offers you! Pay special attention to the monitors to see what data the Treadmill displays and stores. Any basic treadmill should at least be able to tell you the distance you have run and the time it takes you.

9. IMPORTANT SAFETY FEATURES

In relation to safety features, the average treadmill should include a safety key, hand rails and the option to emergency stop. The safety key is used to ensure the machine stops if the user gets too close to the end of the running belt. This reduces the risk of falling of the treadmill. The handrails offer support in the event of a loss of balance. An emergency stop button give the user the freedom to push their limits with confidence that when they are ready to stop they can stop.

10. CHECK CUSTOMER REVIEWS

An effective way to assess how much value for money you are going to get before you make the purchase is by checking customer reviews. However, it is also important to consider that people are more likely to highlight their bad experiences as opposed to positive ones. With this in mind it is normal to expect a handful of negative reviews on any product. If there is a substantial amount of negative feedback though, it may be an indication that you need to reconsider.

11. THE SMALL PRINT

Another indication of the quality and durability a treadmill has can be revealed by reading the small print associated to the product. This is an opportunity to discover ho much confidence the manufacturers have in the machine. Anything with less than a year warranty should make you wonder if it the treadmill will actually last a year. As with all machinery, even the most reliable, faults can occur. With this in mind, it is important to asses what the company selling the treadmill will do if your treadmill has problems. Is there a system in place to service the machines in the event of a breakdown? Are there any tutorials online that address common problems? Can you obtain spare parts for the machine anywhere?

12. MAINTENANCE

Considering how much maintenance the treadmill needs is also something to think about before you make the purchase. Treadmill will need to be lubricated at regular intervals. Does the treadmill that you are purchasing give any information about maintenance? Is there an option to purchase oil and or cleaning products for the treadmill.
